RESTORE+ consultation meeting in East Kalimantan

RESTORE+ organized a workshop to consult relevant stakeholders of East Kalimantan province on the proposed methodology for identifying landscape restoration areas. The event aimed to strengthen mutual understanding and engagement on forest and landscape restoration targets and strategies as well as collect learning and experience from the parties.

The RESTORE+ team organized a consultation workshop which took place on 22 and 23 May 2018 in Hotel Midtown, Samarinda. Relevant stakeholders that were invited to participate in the event included representatives of the provincial government (Forestry Agency, Agriculture Agency, Planning Agency, etc.), representatives of universities and local research institutes, NGOs and companies operating in the region.

The workshop was divided into three parts: a first general panel discussion on the background of the relevant policies for the recovery of landscape function and then two parallel discussion sessions. Both sessions were organized into a presentation part followed by two in-depth break-out sessions. The sessions revolved around two central topics:

• identifying potential areas where to plan restoration activities (taking into account not only environmental aspects, but also aspects of local community welfare, cultural values, and economic development)
• evaluating the results of the restoration activities (from the contribution of modelling in planning the activities, to the concrete forms of landscape restoration already achieved).
