RESTORE+ launches Jelantara Campaign in Indonesia
|
Following the first batch of crowdsourcing campaigns that interpret satellite images into land cover information, the recently started Jelantara campaign aims to collect field data and verify it vis-à-vis the reality on the ground.

Assessing large-scale forest and landscape restoration potential and impacts of restoration activities requires extensive and geographically diverse set of data, verified, and complemented with on-the-ground information. With this approach, RESTORE+ aims to strengthen participatory and evidence-based land use policy making to inform restoration targets and strategies in Indonesia.
To this end, from 2019 to 2020, RESTORE+ initiated and successfully ran a series of crowdsourcing campaigns on regional and national level in Indonesia. These campaigns started by focusing on land cover classification, followed by a second campaign which aimed at identifying land cover changes throughout the provinces of East Kalimantan and South Sumatra.
RESTORE+ now entered the second phase of crowdsourcing activities by launching Jelantara campaign in South Sumatra and East Kalimantan. The name of the campaign “Jelantara” is short for “jelajah nusantara” (in English “to explore the archipelago”). It describes the gamified approach of the data collection campaign.
The launch was reported by local news media in South Sumatra:
